AoC East Midlands Colleges have developed a wide range of initiatives, opportunities and programmes to engage their students in sporting activities. Projects have focused on increasing participation in Physical Activity and Sport at all levels and developing invaluable skills through Volunteering. Please see below for examples of best practice case studies from across the region.

College: Lincolnshire Sports Partnership
Project: Lincs Healthy Campus Programme
Meeting the Challenge
What we wanted to do To develop a project that would include partnership working with the 6 county institutes which included the 4 FE colleges in the county and the County Sports Partnership.
The project has 2 main objectives – To improve the health of students on staff on campus by developing links with the health service in areas such as smoking, drugs, drinking, healthy eating etc and to provide more sporting opportunities for every student and member of staff on each campus.
What we did The Healthy Campus Programme, has been funded by 2 external partners, the Primary Care Trust ( £30,000) and through Sport England Community Investment Fund (£40,000). The programme will run over the next 2 years and will focus on the development of clubs in 6 sports across the 4 FE colleges in the county.
The colleges decided which 6 sports to focus on and working with community groups and clubs the project started in September. The 6 sports were promoted during Freshers weeks and students are now being recruited into the clubs on each site.
To support the development of each of the 6 sports, all the FE College were successful in gaining Sport Unlimited Grants of over £17,000 across the county.

Impact The project will improve the general health on campus by increasing participation in sport through the development of student clubs. We will be training coaches and volunteers to support club development. The clubs will link to the community clubs and if possible the teams from each sport will play in the county competitions.
In addition to the physical activity improving the health of staff and students, on each campus we will also be working with the Health Service to improve the general health and understanding of heath issues on each campus.
There are clubs that cater for elite performers on each campus, but there are large numbers of participants that would take part of the opportunity arose. This programme is the opportunity. Over the life of the programme we are expecting over 400 students to achieve coaching qualifications and then support over 2000 participants.

College: Loughborough College, Leicestershire
Project: Sports Enrichment Programme
Meeting the Challenge
What we wanted to doTo meet our participation FESCo target, we became part of the re-vamped Cross College Enrichment Programme here at the College. The aim of this programme was to increase the frequency and variety of sporting activities to all students here at Loughborough College.
What we did We have created a diverse sports enrichment programme that is accessible to all Loughborough College students with 3 different activities running every lunch time between 12-1pm and 1-2pm (15 activities per week). We have included girls only sessions to try and increase the number of females participating in the programme. We have also worked in partnership with our Transitions department to put on sports taster sessions to increase the self esteem and confidence of our special needs students to encourage them join in the programme.
The programme is funded centrally through our Student Development Team.

Impact The enrichment programme was a great success last year with good numbers in each of the sports activities on offer and we engaged over 200 different 16-19 year olds in physical activity over the course of the year. We found the following sports and activities to be the most successful; basketball / badminton / football and lacrosse.
We had a good range of students participating in the programme however, this is something we are looking to further develop this year through the FESCo Sports Survey. We will be carrying out a sample of the questionnaire to one tutor group in each department and one section of the survey is based on the enrichment provision here at the college. We will then look to include sports and activities the students have suggested from the survey and the target that department to engage in that sport.
We feel that the enrichment session has enabled us to increase the sports provision for 16-19 year olds here at the college and as a result, more students are accessing high quality sports provision. This year we are looking to create more College-Club links and apply for Sport Unlimited funding to again increase the variety and choice of the enrichment programme available to our students.

Project: Lunch time taster sessions
Meeting the Challenge
What we wanted to doProvide student the opportunity to try various leisure activities in their lunch period where they wouldn't get the opportunity otherwise.
This is an ongoing project and has already seen sessions including fencing and boxercise.
Once we have gauged the interest levels we would look to run these sessions on a regular basis.
What we didInvited the coaches from the various clubs that utilise the college facilities on a regular basis to come in and coach the students and at the same time promote their evening clubs and venues.
This fulfilled our exit route strategy and covered any proposed costs.

ImpactAlthough early days, the sessions are still being promoted and are attracting students that are not necessarily part of sports teams.

Project: Dodgeball
Meeting the Challenge
What we wanted to doCreate an opportunity in sport for non sport students at a time suitable for them.
What we did Went into non sport course tutorials and spoke to students about opportunities in sport. I asked a BND IT group if there was any sport that they could do as a group together what would they do? The response was Dodgeball. I acted on the enthusiasm from the group finding out when there was a suitable gap in their timetable and scheduled the session on a day when they had to return to lessons for college. I linked in with the local Dodgeball club who did not have a coach available but sent us a couple of lads working towards their level one qualification. They talked about the rules to the students and played some games with them.

ImpactThe session is now continuing every week and we have on average 10-12 males who would not normally participate in any sport. The group has come up with a logo and team name and are looking to play Trent University very shortly.
Positive feedback has also been received from tutors as the students were just hanging around in their gap of an hour and a half with nothing to do. Other colleges within Nottinghamshire are now starting to play Dodgeball and we will hopefully have a tournament towards the end of term.

Project: One day's climbing wall experience
Meeting the Challenge
What we wanted to doWe wanted to provide students with the opportunity to try some fun and challenging physical activity at the college. This would then provide me with the opportunity to speak to course tutors and get learners to complete a sport and physical activity survey after they had completed the session.
The learners targeted would be those that would not usually do any physical activity.
What we didA mobile climbing wall from Quorn Outdoor education centre was booked and funded via the School Sports Partnership. This came with two instructors that would teach and motivate the learners to complete the climb.
I targeted a whole department and offered them a time slot when learners would sign up. It was offered to hard to reach departments that would normally not sign up for enrichment activities. This included Construction, Plumbing, Motor Vehicle and Skills for Work students.
The climbing wall was placed outside the main student cafe, which was great as every student would see what was happening.

ImpactThe weather was very cold and I thought this would put the students off. Luckily most students still took part. Over 60 took part and 10 tutors. All students completed a questionnaire which will provide me with some baseline data in order to book further activities.
Everyone was talking about it and provided a real buzz at the college.
It was great to see the students working as a team by holding the safety rope and encouraging each other to climb higher.
We are now looking at repeating this activity once it gets warmer and will target different learners.
This gave me a great opportunity to meet students and tutors and introduce myself.
