Leicester City Colleges score with football foundation grant

Footballers in Leicester were celebrating today following a £6,868 grant awarded by the Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity.

The cash bonanza will allow Leicester’s Inner City College’s including Regent College, Gateway College, Leicester College and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth 1 to run a Sports Leadership project for students allowing them to gain qualifications as Level 1 Football Coaches.  The students will then work alongside the FA Skills Programme to deliver a coach volunteering program in local inner city primary schools.  The scheme will look at developing fundamental football skills in boys and girls aged 5-11 over a term of coaching.

The Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities throughout the country. Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity with a £40m budget going straight into the heart of football.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation said:

“We warmly congratulate the colleges and the local FA for their hard work and dedication in securing this award.”

“Sport is playing a central role in helping people to stay fit, strengthen communities and promote responsibility amongst young people. It is thanks to the funding from our partners the Premier League, The FA and Government that the Football Foundation exists to support this type of excellent project in Leicester.”

Robert Lewin, Further Education Sports Coordinator at Regent College, said: “This is a fantastic project that will benefit hundreds of local children over the next three years.  It also gives our students a great opportunity to develop their coaching skills whilst gaining qualifications and experience as volunteers.  The Football Foundation has provided us with fantastic support, enabling us to get this project up and running and we’re delighted to be working alongside them”.
