You should aim to eat no more than 2000 kcal (adult female) and 2500kcal (adult male) per day which should be obtained from a balanced diet including plenty of starchy foods, at least 5 fruit and veg a day, and plenty of water. You should also aim to cut down on the amount of fat, sugar and salt you eat. If you are hoping to lose weight, your calorie intake should be reduced and advice on how to do this is also included in this section.

Homemade Turkey Burgers

Homemade turkey burgers are simple, very
economical to make, healthier than a normal
burger and are pretty delicious to eat too!.

Serves: 4
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

450g minced turkey

1 onion, very finely chopped

1 carrot, grated

50g sweetcorn, thawed if frozen

2 teaspoons dried mixed herbs

Ground black pepper

4 standard burger buns, sliced in two

Shredded lettuce and sliced tomatoes

In a large bowl, mix together the minced turkey, onion, carrot, sweetcorn and herbs.

You can use your hands to mix everything together.

Season with some pepper. Shape the mixture into 4 burgers.

Cover and chill the burgers if you're cooking them later.

Preheat the grill.

Place the burgers on the grill rack and grill them for 12-15 minutes, turning
them over once, until browned and
cooked through.

Lightly toast the burger buns on the cut sides only.

Top the bases with some lettuce, then
add the burgers and sliced tomatoes and pop the bun tops in place.
